Update: Babson President-Elect Dr. Kerry Healey Stands As An Ally to LGTBQ Community in Support of Marriage Equality
I am thrilled to say that President-Elect Dr. Kerry Healey has enthusiastically joined the ALLY movement at Babson College, and stands in solidarity with the LGBTQ community during this important week for Marriage Equality.
Things move pretty quickly around here at Babson. After I wrote yesterday to Ask Babson President-Elect Dr. Kerry Healey to stand with me as an Ally to the LGBTQ Community, she reached out by phone as she did a media tour around Boston, and we set up a time to sit down today.
We talked about how much has changed since her opposition to Gay Marriage during her 2006 Massachusetts Gubernatorial campaign, how her personal beliefs on marriage equality have evolved long before our conversation today, and how she is excited to have an opportunity to publicly voice her support to the LGBTQ community as Babson’s President-Elect.
Beliefs are evolving everywhere this week, as we’ve seen in recent weeks with Sen. Rob Portman’s announcement, and then with many Republicans, including a number of former Romney campaign aides, signing the amicus brief urging the Supreme Court to overturn Prop. 8. I am hopeful that we’ll see these changes reflected in the Supreme Court this week, but I am heartened to know that we now have an outspoken supporter of the LGBTQ & Allies community here at Babson.
I’ve included Dr. Healey’s statement here, and applaud her quick response and positive action during her introduction to the Babson community.
“I was exceedingly pleased that the leadership of the Graduate Student Council reached out in such a thoughtful manner to engage with me on this important matter. I was happy to have the opportunity to listen, learn more and to participate in a productive dialogue on the issue of marriage equality. I am pleased to join with the Council and stand as an Ally to the Babson LGBTQ community at this critical and historic time. I appreciate the diversity and inclusiveness of the Babson community and look forward to continuing to find ways to support and advance these core values and ideals as President.” Dr. Kerry Healey, 3/27/2013
